1-1 Dialectical Behaviour therapy Skills (DBT)
What is DBT ?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), originally developed by Dr Marsha Linehan, is a cognitive-behavioural approach that helps individuals manage intense emotions. In the context of anxiety, DBT teaches you to accept your current internal experience without judgment while simultaneously working to change the behaviours and thought patterns that keep you trapped in a state of fear.
The term "dialectical" refers to balancing seemingly opposite ideas: acceptance and change. It involves holding two truths at once: you are doing the best you can with the anxiety you have (acceptance), AND you need to learn new skills to improve your situation and feel better (change).
Unlike traditional coaching that may focus solely on goal setting, DBT-informed coaching addresses the emotional dysregulation that often obstructs these goals.
The Function of DBT in Managing Anxiety
Anxiety functions as an alarm system that will not turn off. DBT functions as the manual to recalibrate that alarm through four functions:
